Purchasing Management Association of Rhode Island
Annual Report for the program year 2009-2010
2010 has been an extremely busy and challenging year. We learned that the PMARI’s name isn’t as widely known around our area as we thought and that the Institute for Supply Management is known; therefore, the Board of Directors decided that for the good of the organization we should consider changing our name from Purchasing Management Association of Rhode Island to Institute for Supply Management – Greater Rhode Island. This was put to a vote of the general membership at our regular February Open Forum meeting and the vote carried unanimously. We also decided that we have to start marketing ourselves rather aggressively through Chamber of Commerce and trade shows.
As in past years the regular September, October, February and April meetings were solely PMARI. In January we were supposed to have a joint meeting with Providence APICS; however, APICS had to cancel that scheduled meeting at a late date so our Programs Committee scrambled to put together a program solely for our members on our regular fourth Monday meeting date. Since we had committed to a joint meeting with APICS and they rescheduled their January meeting to February we found it necessary to have two meetings in February: one as a joint meeting with APICS and the second to have our regular “Open Forum” but even more importantly to have a general membership vote on changing our name from PMARI to ISM – Greater RI.
In March we had our annual Supplier’s Night with APICS Providence members attending our meeting which provides extra income to support our other programs.
Our membership numbers at the end of 2009-2010 program years stands at 125, (104 regular members, 9 student members, 2 educational members, 1 trial member plus 9 honorary life members); however, we have 7 members that were unemployed at the beginning of 2010 and under ISM and PMARI rules these 7 members have a dues waiver so that there is no revenue coming in from them.
Our restarted Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) workshops came to an end since ISM is no longer offering C.P.M. exams; however, a Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) body of knowledge workshop with six registrants has just been completed. A shorter CPSM Bridge Exam workshop for people already possessing a C.P.M. will start in early fall to be completed before the holidays. These efforts align with our stated Mission Statement.
The attendance at our March Suppliers Night combined PMARI & APICS Providence meeting continues to be reasonable with 69 members, guests and suppliers registered and for that we thank them. There were thirteen suppliers that exhibited plus one that paid the fee while being fully aware that schedule constraints prevented her from exhibiting. For this we thank them all.
Previously under the direction of Peter Dodge, the Golf Outing had become an annual event, and each year its’ popularity seems to gain momentum. Unfortunately last year the event had to be canceled due to a low number of registrations. The reason for the poor registration count is the economy. Several participants from past years had to opt out telling us they couldn’t justify spending money to play golf while laying off workers.
This year’s event is being held in the fall and is being chaired by Peter Dodge. Hopefully the economic downturn will have eased somewhat so that we can regain enough registrants to allow this event to go forward. In 2008 the proceeds from this tournament allowed PMARI to contribute $1,000 to St. Rita’s Food Bank to feed the hungry and also contributed an additional $1,000 to the monies that the Northeast Supply Management Group supplied for scholarships for PMARI members and their children.
A slate of Officers and Directors, contained one new Director, was proposed by the Nominating Committee. The slate will be duly elected and installed this evening. The meeting will then be turned over to the returning president.
From all the officers and directors, committee chairs and volunteers, a thank you is extended to you, the members, for your commitment to our association, by your attendance to all functions, meetings and special events. Your attendance is vital to the continued growth of this association. Without you we are not able to grow, so please keep coming.
